Women and Families Center (WFC) began in 1889 as the Meriden YWCA, and provided a limited number of social, educational and recreational programs to women and young children. As the needs of the community evolved, WFC responded with programs designed to meet these emerging needs. In 2000, the organization became the Women and Families Center, a human service agency serving Meriden, Wallingford, Middlesex County, and Greater Haven. WFC's budget is approximately two million dollars, with funding from city, state and federal sources, as well as foundation support and charitable donations. Administrative/overhead costs are 8%. Programs include:
(Developing Opportunities for Human Resources)
The employment and training program serves low income men, women and youth. Programs include English as a Second Language (ESL), training and certification in ‘in-demand’ fields (such as Pharmacy Technician, Human Services, Customer Service, and Emergency Medical Technician), job readiness workshops, and job-placement assistance.
The program provides short-term individual and group supportive counseling and accompaniment services to survivors of sexual violence, their family and loved ones in Middlesex County, and Greater New Haven. The prevention component also offers training, workshops and programs for school aged children in violence prevention, bullying, internet safety and sexual harassment.
Project STAR is a sliding scale, fee-based program for school aged children, located in three of Meriden’s elementary schools. Staffed by certified teachers, the curriculum includes science, technology, art, and recreation combined to foster the development of problem solving and critical thinking skills.
WFC’s preschool program is designed to prepare 3-5 year olds for kindergarten. It is fully accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
This program serves youth in Meriden and Middletown who are homeless or near homeless, at risk of homelessness, and at-risk of sexual exploitation. WFC’s Project REACH provides street outreach, support center services, and preventative services to sustain youth in stable housing or, if needed, to secure stable housing for them.
